Tips for hiking in the rain

Hiking in the rain in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

Rainy weather doesn’t necessarily mean bad weather. In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, rainy days hold plenty of magic: the crisp air smells of fresh rain, the mountain peaks are shrouded in a mystical blanket of cloud, and a special stillness descends upon the natural world. Although it’s tempting to spend a rainy day in the spa, even overcast days offer lovely opportunities to explore nature.

Here are a few tips for hiking in the rain, to ensure the whole family enjoys the experience.

1. Waterproof equipment

Waterproof kit is a must for hiking in the rain. After all, if your shoes or clothes get soaked, it’s likely to spoil your enjoyment of hiking in the rain. For a lovely experience of nature in the rain, we recommend the following kit:

  • Waterproof (hiking) boots
  • Waterproof jacket or cape with a hood
  • Rain trousers or waterproof overtrousers
  • Rain cover for your rucksack
  • SHF umbrella
2. Itinerary planning

Choosing a suitable route is particularly important when hiking in the rain. Instead of tackling challenging peaks, a lovely walk through the woods along a forest track is a better option in wet weather. Avoid dirt tracks and paths through meadows, as these become slippery and muddy when it rains.

In Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, there are a wide variety of walking trails that lead through the forest along forest tracks. The branches of the trees offer shelter from the rain, and the forest air fills your lungs and soul with an unrivalled sense of freshness.

3. A positive attitude

The joy of exploring nature in the rain and a positive attitude are the be-all and end-all of a lovely rainy walk. In our culture, rain is often labelled as ‘bad weather’, yet nature has something beautiful to offer in all weathers.

There’s also plenty for children to discover on a rainy walk: animals that only come out when it’s raining, babbling brooks by the side of the path and impressive cloud formations.

The children’s walking trails in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis are ideal for walking, even in the rain.

Rain is by no means a bad thing, for it ensures that plants thrive, that the mountain lakes do not dry up and that the streams keep flowing. It ensures that the meadows glow with a rich green and that we can admire magnificent waterfalls. Without rain, nature would look bleak and barren. Instead of labelling rainy days as ‘bad weather’, why not see downpours as a gift for a change?

With waterproof kit, a well-chosen hiking route and a positive attitude, you’ll have everything you need for a successful rainy hike in Tyrol. However, always keep an eye on the weather: whilst a rainy hike in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is a wonderful experience, a thunderstorm in the mountains can be dangerous. At the first sign of a thunderstorm, you should return to the Schlosshotel immediately and wait out the storm in a safe environment.

After a rainy hike, there’s nothing better than a delicious snack at the SHF afternoon buffet and some relaxation in the wellness area. The Finnish panoramic sauna is the perfect place to warm up, and a revitalising massage ensures deep relaxation.
